Pumpkin Patch
Rachelle and Emily Picking a Pumpkin
Two weekends ago, we continued a family tradition: taking a fall trip to the pumpkin patch. We loaded the kids into Bessie the Bus, our new Suburban, and headed to the Book Family Farm for a visit to their harvest festival.
As we pulled into the parking lot, we noticed a running helicopter sitting in the field next to us. It was fire safety week at the farm, and we watched a demonstration of a rescue by a fire crew as well as a water dump by the helicopter. We fed the sheep and goats, played on playground equipment, took a ride in a horse-drawn wagon, and ate snow cones. Then we walked through the pumpkin patch, and each child picked a pumpkin to take home.
Once we got the pumpkins home, we tried something a little different. Instead of carving the pumpkins, we painted them. We gave the kids brushes and paint on palettes made of brown paper bags. They each created their abstract art, and then Crystal helped them to give each pumpkin a face.
